Clerk of the Court is elected by voters for four-year terms. The Clerk of the Circuit Court maintains records for the county and its citizens such as divorce and adoption papers, indictments and appeals, licenses issued by the county, marriage licenses, land records, and jury information. Property survey documents can also be accessed at the office of Clerk of the circuit court.
The clerk is responsible for all the official records of the court and all documents relating to cases filed in his or her office. Some of the main duties of the clerk are the docketing of cases, filing of motions and briefs received from counsel, scheduling of cases for argument, filing opinions when released by the court, and issuing mandates in the cases in accordance with the rules.
The Circuit Court Clerk maintains the records of the court and performs other duties in accordance with policies, procedures and standards set by the Judiciary. Clerk’s office offers a unique service for Individuals who wish to check to see if an attorney is in good standing - meaning that no prior disciplinary action has been taken against him or her. Clerks of the circuit Court can also provide information on process and procedures, and assist in filling out forms.
